505-2-.24 STANDARD RENEWAL CREDIT

1. Certificate renewal is an outcome of applying PSC-accepted continuing professional learning activities toward the continued validity of a state certificate. While it is essential for individual educators to maintain valid certificates, the activities of professional learning should be focused toward school improvement leading to increased student learning. The goal of certificate renewal and professional learning is for educators within a school system to work together to enhance established educational goals for the individual educator, the school and the district to assist students in meeting state standards for student achievement.
2. The two types of renewable Georgia certificates are the Clear Renewable and Performance-Based (PB) certificates. These certificates are valid for a 5-year period, during which time the following requirements must be met:
   1. 6 semester hours of college course work; or 10 credits of Georgia Professional Learning Units (PLUs); or 10 credits of Continuing Education Units, as outlined in paragraph (3) and (4)(b), below; or 10 credits based on U.S. DOE Teacher-To-Teacher Workshops; or, completion of one full year of acceptable school experience (as outlined in Rule 505-2-.37, paragraph 5) while working in another state on a valid certificate issued by that state; and,
   2. a criminal record check, as outlined in paragraph (5), below;
3. Types and Timing of Renewal Credit.
   1. To be acceptable for certificate renewal, credit may be in any combination of the following:
      1. College course work reflected on official transcripts from PSC-accepted accredited institutions (See Rule 505-2-.22);
         1. Course work must be a grade of “c” or better;
         2. 3 semester hours is equivalent to 5 quarter hours;
         3. Developmental studies courses and course work that is audited and/or exempted without credit shall not be accepted.
      2. Professional Learning Units (PLUs) reflected on official transcripts from school systems, colleges or other state agencies approved by the Georgia Department of Education;

How CE Credits Online Satisfies Georgia Educator Certification Renewal Requirements

Professional Learning Unit Credits
CE Credits Online is an approved provider for PLU’s for the State of Georgia. A PLU is a unit of credit based on 10 contact hours of formal instruction or its equivalent (preparation phase) and on verification that the intent of the formal instruction has been implemented on the job (on-the-job performance phase) or on mastery verification conducted during the preparation phase.

The minimum contact time for one PLU activity shall be 10 contact hours (one PLU). Training activities for more than one PLU shall be in multiples of 10 contact hours. Partial PLUs or fractions of PLUs may not be awarded. No more than eight contact hours of instruction shall be conducted per day with a maximum of four PLUs earned per week.

Individual employed by a public or private school or school system in Georgia desiring Professional Learning Unit credits must complete a Prior Approval Form. The completed form must be signed by the participant's local, staff development coordinator, headmaster, or other person authorized to assure that the improvement goals of the public or private school employing the participant are met by the course(s) being offered by CE Credits Online.  

Participants that are not currently employed by a district or school system in the state of Georgia will not need Prior Approval forms.

University Credits
You may request university, post baccalaureate, academic credit(s) from one of CE Credits Online partner universities. CE Credits Online suggests Georgia teachers contact their local professional development coordinator to obtain verification that the proposed activity meets criteria and needs of the teacher's individual Professional Development Plan (PDP), his/her school's professional development plan, and the local school system's professional development plan.
