Course Description:

This course focuses on effective strategies for English language instruction. Participants will go beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to explore and implement innovative ways of teaching vocabulary and grammar, listening and speaking, reading and writing, and designing fair and accurate assessments. Learn more about ELL (English language learner) students and their needs and how to choose the most appropriate materials and activities for the classroom. Explore how teachers can choose and fine-tune the principles that exactly fit their teaching situation. Participants will rethink the traditional native vs. non-native distinction, see why teaching English is so different from teaching other subjects, and explore innovative approaches like Communicative Language Teaching and the lexical approach.

Course Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Use a number of general language-teaching principles to guide your choice of classroom activities.
  • Discover some different ways to select and teach words and phrases that are especially useful for your students, and get to know the lexical approach.
  • Examine listening, speaking, and reading skills while exploring what you can do to help learners communicate more effectively in English and improve their comprehension and reading speed.
  • Select appropriate tasks and topics to help your students compose texts more effectively with a better sense of why writing is the most challenging ability for language learners.
  • Be a more effective and reflective teacher, as well as see the importance of continuing your professional growth now and throughout your career.

Enrollment is a two-step process:

To Register/Enroll in a Course:

Register:

  • Register with WA ESD 112 by going to ESD 112 pdenroller
  • Once you have registered, ESD 112 will email you a prepaid enrollment code.

Enroll:

  • Begin at https://www.cecreditsonline.org/collections/educational-service-district-112
  • Select your course and click “Add to Cart”.
  • Review cart and click “Login”.
  • If you’re a new user, click “Create account”. If you’re a returning user, log in with your email and password.
  • You will now be returned to the cart. Enter your enrollment code and click “Validate”.
  • Click “Check Out”.
  • Complete your order by entering your contact information. Click “Continue to Payment Method”. (You will not be charged or need to enter a credit card number)
  • Click “Complete Order”.
  • If you are a new user, you will receive an automated email from Schoology with your initial eClassroom Sign In information.
  • You have 180 days from your enrollment date to complete your course.

Upon Course Completion:

Graduate-Level Professional Development Credits

  • We have partnered with regionally-accredited universities to provide graduate-level professional development credits for our courses. All courses taken for graduate credit receive both a Certificate of Completion and an official University Transcript for your records. Their fees are $55 per credit. 
  • Upon completion of your course, email support@cecreditsonline.org and let us know you are complete and which university you have selected for your credits.
  • CE Credits Online will email you how to pay for the credits.
  • CE Credits Online will forward all the required documentation to the University you selected.
  • The University partner will process your course completion and provide a transcript that includes the name of the course, course number, number of credits, and your grade.
  • You will receive directions on how to receive your transcript in email form, and you can also review the University Partners section of our website for more information.
  • Upon successful completion of your course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for your records that will include the name of the course and number of professional development hours completed.
  • The Certificate of Completion is designed as a record that verifies that a professional development course was taken and passed.
  • You must check with your district to ensure the credits received will meet your specific requirements. We will not be held responsible if your school, district or state does not accept the credits issued.

Obtaining Clock Hours:

  • Upon successful completion of your course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion for your records that will include the name of the course and number of professional development hours completed.
  • The Certificate of Completion is designed as a record that verifies that a professional development course was taken and passed.
